SAP to SAP using IDOC and ALE:  

Typically used where a customer has a global SAP based solution for HR master data that needs to be linked to a local/regional solution for payroll, time and attendance and travel expenses.   This integration is also frequently used to update valid cost centres, WBS elements and other non-HR related master data for usage in the SAP portal based self service scenarios.   The direction of the interface can go both ways with either the local or the global solution being the master.  A solution with master ownership which is Info Type driven is also frequently used.

Non-SAP to SAP solution: 

This solution is frequently used in cases where a customer has a non SAP solution for HR master data or time and attendance.

SAP to non-SAP solution 

Most common integration is to send posting files to a non-SAP accounting system.
